Aparna Balram, popularly known as Aparna B Marar is an accomplished Indian classical artist from Kerala. A dynamic personality with multifaceted talents, Aparna,has marked her excellence in diverse streams of Dance, Music, Academics, Organising and Entrepreneurship in a young age. She has received numerous honours including the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy- Yuva Prathibha Award, Calicut University- Kalathilakam Award, National scholarship by Ministry of Culture etc. and is a rank holder with postgraduation in engineering.
Being a reputed dancer and art-educator, she travels extensively around the world for her performances and lectures. She is an empanelled artist of ICCR, as well as a member of American Dance Therapy association. She is a renowned organizer and the director of “Kalabharathi Foundation for Indian Culture and Heritage”, which is a non-profitable cultural organization, regularly organizing festivals,workshops etc. to propagate and promote Indian classical arts, benefitting the youth, women and the underpriviliged.
Aparna believes in making productive contributions, striving for the cause of society through arts.She is presently a resource person and a researcher at National Institute on Developmental Delays, USA training the children with developmental delays in movement exploration activities. She actively takes part in art appreciation programmes for the common people and students too.
Hailing from an artistic family of well known percussionists, Aparna was initiated into the artistic scene from a tender age of four. Ever since, she was blessed to have received extensive training under the most renowned gurus of the country, in different styles of dance and music. Her family is her greatest strength. Her father Mr.Balram K Marar is a marine chief engineer and mother Dr. Sreelekha Balram is a homoepathic doctor.She is married to Mr.Shebeer KI, who is a businessman as well as a noted social-cultural activist. The couple well-compliments mutually in all their endeavors.
Aparna, was introduced into classical dancing from the tender age of four. Guruvayoor Murali, Kalamandalam Rema , RLV Anand and Kalamandalam Balasubramannian were her early teachers from whom she learnt the basics of Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattom, Kuchipudi and Kathakali respectively. Within no time she realized her strong zeal towards Mohiniyattom and Kuchipudi and joined the tutalege of Guru Padmashri Kalamandalam Kshemavathi and Anupama Mohan for higher studies in the dance forms, which she still continues. In the meantime, she underwent a short term training in Nattuvangam and Bharathanatyam under Guru Padmashri Adyar K Lakshman in Chennai. She is also a disciple of the legendary dancer Dr. Padma Subrahmannyam and is pursuing postgraduation in classical dance(MFA) at SASTRA University, Thanjavur.
Her determination to work for the cause of society, prompted her to choose a path wherein the underprivileged is benefitted of arts. She is a resource person in dance and researcher with National Institute on Developmental delays, USA and is actively involved in training children with developmental delays on techniques of movement exploration. Often referred to as a complete artist, her passion extends beyond dancing to teaching, singing and choreographies. With Tthe strong foundation laid by her gurus, outstanding expressive skills, spontaneous creativity and ability to retain the traditionality, Aparna could establish a unique identity within a young age. For her extraordinary talents, she has been bestowed with a number of awards and honours too.
This renowned poem by the Indian poet Sri. Rabindranath Tagore, won him the nobel prize. A few selected parts from “Geethanjali”, was given a visual representation. With a strong and powerful lyrics, the choreography opens up the philosophical and spiritual insights to the divine truth of god.
A poem by Sri.ONV Kurup, in Malayalam. This particular piece was choreographed as a Guruvandanam to the great malayalam poet Sri.ONV Kurup. The poem describes the beauty and the sweetness of our mother land through the aesthetically graceful traditional art of Kerala, Mohiniyattom. It makes us realize that, howmuchever we go behind the globalization and modernization, it is our mother tongue and tradition that has settled down at the bottom of our hearts from the times we were inside the womb of our mother.
A Poem by the great Indian poet Sri. Rabindranath Tagore. This piece is of 45 minutes duration is set to Raagamalika and Thaalamalika. The choreography doesnot just explicates the artistry in mohiniyattom but conveys a very grave social message of the importance of ‘truth’ thereby evoking the public through the medium of dance. “ Rhythm of peace” – Fusion production. This has already staged many venues. This piece envisages the victory of good over evil and at the end enlightens the society to the value of ‘peace’.
The choreography won the first prize in Calicut University interzone arts fest,2011 and Technofest 2009 (All Kerala Engineering colleges arts Fest) in the Group Dance category & the group comprised of 7 members.
A 20 minute long group choreography based on the Rasaleela of Lord Krishna which was staged on the occasion of Guruvayur temple festival 2006.The choreography received much appreciation from the devotees and was done at the age of fifteen.
Aparna has performed over a hundred stages in India and abroad. Besides she has also given lecture demonstrations and art appreciation programmes at various places. Her international tours include the United States of America(2013), Coasta Rica (2013), Kingdom of Bahrein (2010), UAE (2013) and Australia(2006). Few of her major performances in India are :

Along with dance, Aparna has gained reputation as a talented singer too. She has underwent training in classical music, right from the age of 7 under RLV Saju and has won many prizes in classical music competitions during her school and college days. Presently, she is learning Carnatic Music under the maestro Guru R Vaidyanathan Bhagavathar, Thrissur and Hindusthani Music under Sri. VijaySursen. She is also a 3rd year student of Akhila Bharathiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Meerut, pursuing the “visharadha” in Hindusthani Music.She often gives Hindusthani and Ghazal concerts. She has also received training in Violin under Edappally Anilkumar.
Aparna has always been keen enough to maintain an excellent academic record along with her artistic skills. She was referred to as an outstanding student by her teachers in school and college. Her parents especially her mother mentored her right from the childhood to become an allrounder. She completed her schooling from IES public school and Guruvayoor Devaswom English Medium school as a topper.
For the class 10 board exams, she was awarded the Merit Certificate award from CBSE, Delhi for becoming the National topper in Language. She has received the Merit scholarship for ELPSS examination and Credit certificate for IAIS Examination (International Assesment For Indian Students) conducted by University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She has also secured 1st position in inter school CBSE Sahodaya science exhibition under the category ‘Working model- Energy’ , 2006.
Science and mathematics, being her favourite subjects, she joined for graduation in electronics and communication engineering at IES College of Engineering, Calicut University, which she completed with a high score. She was lucky to have received a gold medal from her college, for excellence in multiple fields during graduation.
Later, she did masters in wireless communication engineering, securing a second rank from the PSG College of Technology, one of the finest and amongst the top 20 engineering colleges of the country. She actively takes part in seminars, presentations etc. She has published technical papers in the international journal IJCA( impact factor-0.84) and national conferences at Bangalore and Coimbatore. Due to her proficiency in academics, she was selected for a six months internship at the prestigious Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, Kochi, a division of DRDO, Government of India, to complete her project work. She was awarded the “Best Project Award” from her college for the same.
Aparna is the director of the “Kalabharathi Foundation for Indian Culture and Heritage which is a renowned cultural organisation of India registered as per the charitable society act, regularly organising festivals, workshops etc. to promote and propagate Indian classical arts around the world. Several innovative programmes are arranged and organised benefitting the youth, women and the under privileged.
